The
prosecution arm of the District Attorney's office is divided into
five criminal court teams. Each team is assigned to a courtroom
for case preparation and trial in all matters appearing on that
judge's trial list. The individual teams consist of a Senior Deputy
Prosecutor, two Deputy Prosecutors, a secretary, a victim/witness
coordinator, and a detective.
In addition to the general trial teams, the District Attorney has created the Special Case Unit. This unit prosecutes crimes involving child abuse, domestic violence, and Juvenile crimes. This unit consists of a Chief Deputy Prosecutor, a Senior Deputy for Child Abuse and Domestic Violence, a Senior Deputy for Juvenile Prosecution, and two Deputy Prosecutors for each sub-unit.
Every prosecutor is admitted to the Pennsylvania bar, and many are also admitted in the United States Federal District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Each attorney in the District Attorney's Office handles over three hundred cases per year. This is more than any other prosecutors in comparable offices, including the District Attorney's Offices in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Last year (2007) there were over 7000 criminal cases prosecuted in York County. This includes everything from Homicide and Rape to Drugs to DUIs and Assaults.
Prosecutors work hand in hand with law enforcement, fielding calls on a round the clock basis. Prosecutors assist law enforcement with questions regarding charging of offenses, evidence collection and investigation to provide the best possible criminal case to be presented to a Judge or jury.
