September 1: Sunset Scramble Bike Ride
Rail Trail, Railroad Parking Area, 6:30–9 p.m.
Take a 12- to 15-mile moderately paced ride for exercise and make friends with fellow riders. See historic structures such as Howard Tunnel, Hanover Junction Train Station and New Freedom Train Station. Each rider must have a helmet, a light and water. Bring money for a snack along the way. September 2: Moonlight Boat Ride
Kain Park, Lake Redman Activity Area, 7:30 p.m.
Take a quiet ride on Lake Redman among inlets and along the shore after dark to explore the world of nocturnal life. A 30- minute astronomical tour around the sky is included. After boating, participants will be treated to ice cream sundaes and other refreshments. You may use a County-owned rowboat, pedal boat, canoe or kayak or your private boat. Participants need to bring their own flashlight for each boat. Floatation devices and rowing implements are furnished. $20/couple if using a County-owned boat or $15/couple for a private boat. Add $2 for each individual. Please preregister by calling 840-7440.

September 5: Hanover Junction and New Freedom Train Stations Open for Weekend Hours
Rail Trail, Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday 1–5 p.m.

These two museums contain information on local history. Hanover Junction depicts the 1860s when the train station was a center of activity during the Civil War. The New Freedom Train Station has a 1940s railroad theme, including an actual scale model of a K-9 engine.

Take a 9-mile ride under a bright moon detecting nocturnal life and astronomy and hearing folklore and railroad stories. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the ride. $5, children under the age of 12 are free, NPR.


September 6: Nature Quest
Nixon Park, 2:30–4 p.m.
 Badges—Juniors: Camp Together 8; Webelos: Naturalist 3
Children and parents work as teams or individuals exploring a trail, hunting for answers. Prizes will be awarded at the end. NF, NPR.

September 12: Gardening with Native Plants

Penn State Cooperative Extension staffer Connie Smoltzer will help you enliven your yard, deck or planter with these easy to care for “green” plant options. A variety of natives will be included that cover nearly every gardening spot. Bring photos of your problem spots and receive ideas from PA’s rich plant heritage. Ages 12 and up. NF, NPR.


September 12: Public Star Watch and New Telescope Clinic

Here’s a great chance to view the heavens through telescopes and binoculars. Also learn how to use your new telescope or get hints on what to purchase. September 19: Raptors Rising —Broadwings on the Move

Come out for an afternoon of watching for early migrating birds of prey. Learn the how and why of migration and identification through informal discussion and “eyeson” practice. Take a 5-mile ride in the park. Parks Program Coordinator Jeri Jones will take you back in time as he narrates some of the history along the way. Watch for wildlife and have some fun on the ride. $5/person, pre-registration required at 840-7440.


September 26: Miller’s Heritage Day
Wallace-Cross Mill, 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Anyone with a geographic family or historical connection to milling is invited to attend this special event. Guides from the Friends group will operate the mill machinery and interpret its history while highlighting the miller’s skills. NF, NPR.


September 26: Backpack Picnic Hike

September 27: Parents in the Woods (fall/winter edition)
Nixon Park, 2:30–4 p.m.

Join Park Naturalist Amber Carothers for this indoor/outdoor program discussing how to be safe while hiking in the woods. Participants will learn about ticks and poison ivy prevention as well as how to prepare for a winter hike. The group will then choose which trail to hike and will lead the way. NF. NPR.


September 29: Registration for Boy & Girl Scout Overnights
Nixon Park, 8:30 a.m.

Register for the annual scout overnights at Nixon Park. Junior Girl Scout overnights will be held January 15–16. A Webelo Boy Scout overnight will be held January 8–9. Cadette Girl Scout overnight will be held February 5–6. Overnights will include an indoor program featuring live animals, a night hike and more activities. Each weekend has a limit of 60 scouts.
