A Message From The Executive Director

 May 2008

Are you noticing the York County Parks 40th anniversary banners throughout the entire park system? Look for these banners in all county parks in 2008, thereby recognizing and celebrating York County Parks’ 40th anniversary. That’s right; York County Parks was created in 1968 by the York County Board of Commissioners. Now 40 years later, we ask: “What’s next?” Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny compared to what lies within us.” In addition, we appreciate everyone who attended and supported our 40th dinner celebration and program on April 25th at Wisehaven Banquet and Expo Center.

We welcome our new York County Board of Commissioners serving their 2008–2011 term. They are Steve Chronister, president; Christopher Reilly, vice-president; and Douglas Hoke. They have expressed favorable comments during their campaign in supporting the York County Parks’ mission and vision while serving the residents of York County.

2008 is another year of growth ranging from York County’s first off-leash dog area (Canine Meadows) to new lands for exploring (191 acres acquired through the Conservation Fund). Our 4th Heritage Rail Trail County Park User Survey and Economic Impact Analysis and our 1st Parkwide User Survey are completed and available on our website: www.yorkcountyparks.org. A special committee continues to work on writing a book depicting the Parks’ first 40 years from its creation and development to current day. Also, congratulations to our State Parks system as they celebrate their 115th year in 2008, as well.

Therefore, “What’s next?” is never ending and the Parks staff continues to reach higher and farther to meet your recreational needs. “Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” – Lou Holtz
